Janak Singh Khadka is currently the Ownership General secretary coach of Champion Martial Arts Club-USA.
In the Decade of 1970s, Bruce Lee has introduced Martial Arts in the World. Karate which has reached into the each and every corner of the World has attracted Janak Singh Khadka very much. Janak Singh Khadka, whose introduction is as an International Karate Player, a coach and as an Karate Official. Born in Dhangadhi Town of Far Western Region of Nepal, Khadka’s attention was in the sports rather than in the study in his student life. Football was his first love but he chose Karate as his main sport. During the age of 12/13, he got an opportunity to watch a Bruce Lee movie. That movie made him Bruce Lee’s disciple and totally influenced him to choose Karate as his main sport. After that it became his passion to play Karate. During those days there were Dojos of Taekwondo and Karate in Dhangadhi Town of Far Western Region of Nepal. During his childhood, there was a Karate playing group including Trilok Pandey, Nabin Ghimire, Hikmat Gurung and Amit K.C. Khadka’s Group was totally in the passion of being like Bruce Lee. First of all they were confused between Taekwondo and Karate which sport to choose from. Since, there was less use of hands in Taekwondo where as in Karate both the hands and legs can be used for the self defense, so the Group chose Karate. Khadka’s group thought that playing Karate they can just show off in front of their friend circle but later on Karate made them more disciplined players as well as persons. Khadka and his friends didn’t just made Karate their interest but made it their passion. They used to practice three hours early in the morning and three hours in the evening every day. Hikmat Gurung is the coach in National Sports Council, one of the members of this group which started playing Karate being the devotee of Bruce Lee, other member Trilok Pandey has become and International Karate Referee.
Soon, Khadka won Gold Medal in Kumute and Bronze in Kata in the Youngstar Club Invititational Karate Championship. After that Khadka played Karate from District Level, Regional Level to National and International Level Championships. In 1996, Khadka won Gold Medal in his first participation in the District Level Championship. In the year 1998, 8th SAFF Games brought lots of opportunities for him. For that game he got selected for the first time. During that time as a Regional Coach of National Sports Councils’ responsibility was on his shoulder. But 8th SAFF Games which was going to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal was postponed for one year. Due to the postponement of the games, the selection process has to be done once again, but this time Khadka was unable to be selected for the game and his dream to represent Nepal in the South Asian Games was not completed. Khadka still remembers that moment and feel how important was that opportunity for him which he missed. That time was really difficult stage for the Karate players of Nepal. It is very easy to earn names in the field of Sports in Nepal but very difficult to earn money for the living. So, Khadka’s life has to go through the same difficult stage of life and he has to leave the game and chose to work in the Casino to make his future secure financially. From the Casino job Khadka’s life was somehow secured economically but leaving Karate behind, he was never satisfied. Due to the job his financial condition had become a bit stronger, so he decided to start second inning of his sports life and started hard training for the comeback. His group member Trilok Pandey always insisted him to start Karate time to time because he has strong faith on Khadka that he could do better in Karate after his comeback. So, Khadka started taking special training with Binod Shakya totally focusing on the games outside Nepal. In the year 2009, Taninha-Situ-Ryu-Karate Competition in Japan became his first championship after his comeback where his game limited just only in the participation. But the next year in 2010, in the same Championship organized in Sweden, he won Bronze Medal and was able to raise the flag of Nepal in abroad Championships. In Taninha-Situ-Ryu-Karate Championship-2011 organized in Russia, he made it to the final and won Silver Medal for Nepal. After that Khadka participated in three US Karate Championships in the USA and added two Bronze Medals in his collection of Medals. Khadka has participated in Portugal, Germany and Norway. He has won Bronze Medal in Karate Championship in Norway. During this, he has been honored by “US Sports & Culture Development” award. In the second stage of his Karate life, Khadka became more active and successful while he arranges the entire fund for foreign championships himself. “In the initiation of Karate Federation, with the approval of Sports Council, I used to represent Nepal on self fund for which I got great support from Mr. Raj Bahadur Singh.” Said Khadka.
Sometimes, while playing International Championships, Khadka becomes sad thinking about the lacking facility and technology to the Karate players in Nepal. “Before a decade not only in Karate but in Martial Arts, Nepal was No. 1 in South Asia but now we are far behind. Nowadays there’s a worry of being defeated even by Bhutan” said Khadka. Actually, this situation has come because Karate has not been developed according to the time in Nepal. Lack of infrastructure and scientific coaching techniques, facilities to the players, Karate has not developed that much in Nepal.
There is something that Nepalses Karate players have to learn from Khadka. Actually, Nepalese Karate players used to flee while participating in the developed countries like Europe, America, Japan and other. Khadka has visited many developed countries for the participation in different championships but never had feeling of fleeing and hiding in those countries. Khadka’s economical condition is not strong but he never thought to hide in the developed countries because of his strong love for Nepal. Some karate champions of Nepal were living in other developed countries as refugee and have very lower level of life, so Khadka never thought of leaving Nepal. “Self-respect is a great thing, the respect and love we are getting in Nepal is really difficult to get abroad.”-said Khadka.
